Boring Paper Based TOEFL

Heart attack, this is what some students feel when they take TOEFL test! Some students argue that TOFEL is a perfect test for students who want to attend university, while the other think that many of students are very smart but they can not succeed because of that test. In fact, TOFEL should not be used as a measure for English ability because of scores change too much every time you take the test, does not appear all students skills, and it is too long. First, because there are very different levels between one test form to another, TOEFL scores go up and down too much. For example, some test forms are possible to read and understand because they talk about general information. On the other hand, some forms are very tough and contain a lot of information about specific fields like computer, sciences, and biology. In addition, vocabulary makes a lot of differences in TOEFL scores. Sometimes most of the vocabulary in the TOEFL is understandable, but most of the times vocabulary seems vague and not clear. Huge difference levels among TOEFL forms make every TOEFL test score low or high. Second, TOEFL test does not measure all university skills. In TOEFL there are no writing skills which are very important for university. For example, some majors such as linguistic, and history require writing skills that does not exist in TOEFL. Moreover, TOEFL does not measure speaking skills. A student may get high score but he can not speak English when he answers a phone. That will be a problem for the student in the university because if he passes the test, he will face a hard times in writing and speaking. Third, long test with a lot of questions in few hours are truly bother most students. In addition, a student can not concentrate in TOEFL because of it length. Because TOEFL is too long, and there is no time to answer all questions, some students are distrait during the test. Also, another students feel sleepy, and the other, just guess the answers without reading the passages. It is impossible to finish every section in the test in exact time. Furthermore, this test may bring headaches or stomach to a student. It may also cause tiredness and exhaustion from looking to all papers for three hours. All these things affect students’ scores. Three hours for all sections does not match the length of the test. Opponents who support TOEFL test idea claim that TOEFL tells university about student’s English skills because when student get a high score that means he is ready to face all difficulties in university, but not for other students who needs more effort to be ready. However, this is not true argument because student may get 520, but he can not read well. As a result, when student go to university he will be shocked when a professor asks him to read fifty pages in one day. In addition, every student who wants to apply for university should write and speak well so he can deal with any subject, and communicates with teachers, and students. Although some students doing very well in TOEFL , they can not success in university. The answer for how these students attend to university is some students choose answers in arbitrary way. It means these students do not know answers, they just guess. TOEFL test should be improved for foreigner students in the better way to be effective test. Finally, TOEFL test should not be used for university because of it disadvantages. First, scores change too much in every time a student takes the test. Second, it is not a measurement for all university’s skills. Finally, the time for the test is very long that makes students nerves, and less concentration. Actually, if there is enough time for all questions, and if the test contains writing and speaking beside listening, grammar, and reading, the test will be proper to test students’ skills.
